Unite Glasgow Accommodation Block Boiler Plantroom Upgrade

Overview

At Eco Electrical and Building Services, our mission is to provide state-of-the-art electrical and building services that prioritize sustainability and energy efficiency. We recently undertook a project that encapsulates what we do best: a boiler plantroom controller panel conversion and recommission at Unite Glasgow Accommodation Block. The project was a combination of hardware updates and data analytics, aimed at maximizing the efficiency of the building’s heating system. The focus was on converting the existing Trend Building Management System (BMS) control panel to a Resource Data Management (RDM) BMS, enhancing remote access capabilities and implementing data-driven efficiency measures.

Challenges

The existing Trend BMS panel was outdated, making it difficult to integrate with newer, more efficient technology. There were also issues with remote monitoring, requiring on-site management for system changes, which isn’t practical in a 24/7 operation.

Solutions

Control Panel Conversion

Our first step was converting the existing Trend BMS control panel to an RDM BMS. This conversion updated the building’s control system, aligning it with the latest industry standards for energy management.

RDM Touchscreen Integration

We integrated an RDM touchscreen into the existing control panel. This upgrade allows for easier on-site control and system monitoring, facilitating instant adjustments to maximize system efficiency.

4G Router and External Aerial

A 4G router with an external aerial was installed, enabling 24/7 remote monitoring and control. This makes it easier for building managers to make adjustments without having to be physically present, allowing for timely interventions that can save both energy and costs.

Custom Graphics Package

A bespoke graphics package was developed for the touchscreen and online dashboard. This package provides a visually intuitive interface, making it easier to monitor and manage the system.

Data Collection and Analysis

Through the new RDM system, we implemented data collection protocols for ongoing analysis. The aim is to continually monitor energy use and identify areas for potential improvement.

Results

  • Remote Access: 24/7, 365 remote connection achieved, enhancing flexibility and enabling immediate adjustments.
  • Enhanced Usability: The touchscreen and online dashboard make system monitoring and control easier and more efficient.
  • Data-Driven: Ongoing data collection allows for regular analysis, leading to continually optimized performance.
  • Energy Savings: Preliminary data suggests a significant improvement in energy efficiency, though ongoing monitoring will provide more robust metrics.

Conclusion

The Unite Glasgow Accommodation Block project exemplifies our commitment to energy-efficient solutions that combine the latest technology with data analytics. Through our specialized services in Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS), we strive to contribute to a more sustainable future, one project at a time.
